During the summer of 2024, I took a summer course on economic inequality at the London School of Economics. I explored the complex dynamics behind the growing gap between the ultra-rich and the rest of society. The course covered key aspects such as the distribution of gains from capitalism, globalization, and technological progress, drawing on economic history, geography, and sociology. I gained a deep understanding of how to conceptualize inequality and track its evolution over time, considering factors like social mobility, inheritance, and demographic influences. The curriculum emphasized critical analysis of evidence and the ability to compare historical and contemporary inequalities. This course has equipped me with the skills to interpret and contextualize economic disparities, offering insights into gender and ethnic dimensions of inequality.
While taking the class, I also had the opportunity to learn and explore the city of London!
An Essay I wrote for the class answering this question: Has relative economic inequality changed over the long run in human societies? How do we know?
